Jim’s Place East Open for Mother’s Day Lunch:

Tribute to Mothers First Began in Greece

MEMPHIS, TENN. (April 25, 2007)… Jim’s Place East, normally closed on Sundays, will be open for lunch to observe Mother’s Day on May 11. Check call 388.7200, ext. 4. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for early birds.

“The earliest tribute to mothers actually dates back to the annual spring festival in ancient Greece,” said Jim’s Place co-owner Angelo Liollio. “As first generation Greeks born in the U.S., our Mother’s Day menu will reflect Greek inspired cuisine from our past as well as American and Southern dishes to please all appetites.”

According to 123holiday.net, Mother’s Day in the United States was begun nearly 150 years ago when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community. Daughter Anna continued her mother’s quest and lobbied businessmen and politicians until in 1914, then-President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday. Today, Mother’s Day has become the most popular day of the year to dine out.

The Jim’s Place Mother’s Day lunch menu includes Greek specialty entrees such as roast leg of lamb with Grecian seasonings and souflima (savory pork dish with rice) plus a fish and seafood lovers selection with Norwegian salmon or tilapia in lemon-oregano sauce, Low Country crawfish and shrimp, Mississippi pecan encrusted catfish and Gulf extra select oysters. Or, choose from batter dipped veal cutlet, ribeye steak and chicken Parmesan. Vegetable sides offer fresh turnip greens, creamed Idaho potatoes, mixed summer squash casserole, garden salad and spinach peta baked in phyllo pastry. There’s also a Kid’s Menu available.

Offering beautiful patio seating amid tall trees and glorious azaleas, Jim’s Place was recently voted among the Top 3 Best Restaurants in the city by Memphis magazine and listed among the Top 100 Restaurants in America by Magellan Press’ Where the Locals Eat. Jim’s Place continues to maintain other honors such as Most Romantic, Best Greek and Best Business lunch by Memphis Flyer and The Commercial Appeal. The restaurant received the Memphis Restaurant Association

Pioneer Award in 2006.
